How AI Tools Are Transforming Teaching in India's Government Schools

India’s government school system serves over 25 crore students — making it one of the largest public education networks in the world. Yet, the quality of education in many of these schools has long been a challenge. As someone who has spent over 14 years teaching in government schools in Barpeta, Assam, I have witnessed firsthand the gaps that exist: outdated teaching methods, lack of resources, overburdened teachers, and students falling behind in foundational skills.

The Problem I Set Out to Solve

When I started teaching at 847 No. Belortari LP School, I realized that the biggest bottleneck was not the lack of willingness among teachers — it was the absence of modern tools and resources. Teachers were spending hours creating lesson plans manually, often without proper alignment to curriculum standards. Students in remote areas had no access to personalized learning support. And the gap between policy frameworks like NEP 2020 and classroom reality was growing wider every day.

I asked myself a simple question: What if technology could bridge this gap?

Building AI Tools for Real Classrooms

That question led me to develop over 15 AI-powered educational tools, each designed to solve a specific problem faced by teachers and students in government schools across India.

Lesson Plan Creator AI

This became my first breakthrough tool. Lesson Plan Creator AI enables teachers to instantly generate comprehensive, activity-based lesson plans aligned with NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework. Today, over 16,000 AI-generated lesson plans are created daily by teachers across India using this tool. It supports multiple languages and curriculum frameworks, making it accessible to educators regardless of their location or medium of instruction.

AI Teacher

AI Teacher is an intelligent tutoring system that simplifies complex topics for students and competitive exam aspirants. It works in English, Hindi, Assamese, and Bodo — making quality tutoring accessible to students who would otherwise have no access to private coaching. The tool proactively suggests related topics and generates quizzes, turning passive reading into active learning.

Nipun Mitra AI

Perhaps the most impactful tool I have built is Nipun Mitra AI — an AI chatbot designed to provide guidance on India’s NEP 2020 education policy and the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) framework. Supporting over 100 languages, Nipun Mitra AI was officially inaugurated by India’s Union Education Minister, recognizing its potential to democratize access to policy information for teachers across the country.

The Results So Far

The impact of these tools has been humbling:

  • 55 lakh+ students have benefited from AI-powered learning resources
  • 20,000+ government schools across India are using these tools
  • 16,000+ AI lesson plans are generated every single day
  • Teachers report saving 2–3 hours daily on lesson preparation
  • Student engagement and foundational literacy scores have improved in pilot schools

The Role of NEP 2020 and FLN

India’s National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy as the bedrock of all future learning. The Nipun Bharat Mission, launched under NEP 2020, sets clear learning outcomes for children in classes 1–3. My tools are designed to directly support these national goals — giving teachers the resources they need to implement FLN effectively in their classrooms.

AI does not replace the teacher. It empowers the teacher. It takes care of the repetitive, time-consuming tasks so that educators can focus on what they do best: inspire, mentor, and guide their students.

What Comes Next

I believe we are at an inflection point in Indian education. The combination of AI, mobile technology, and progressive policies like NEP 2020 creates an unprecedented opportunity to transform learning outcomes at scale. My goal is to continue building tools that are free, accessible, and designed for the realities of government school classrooms.

If you are a teacher, school administrator, or education policymaker, I invite you to explore these tools at prasenjitsarma.com/apps and experience how AI can make a real difference in your classroom.

Education is not just a profession for me — it is a mission. And with AI as our ally, I believe we can ensure that every child in India gets the quality education they deserve.
